Video History of Mills Library at Rollins College

I love this wonderful 3:00 minute video history of Mills Library at Rollins College  in Winter Park, FL.  The video provides a brief overview for the changing role of a library on campus and includes an audio segment with President Eisenhower congratulating the college after the library opened. St. Cloud State University Sesquicentennial Anniversary

St. Cloud State University in Minnesota is preparing to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding in 186 9.  The initial sesquicentennial page includes a short video and links to a timeline , various events or news related to the anniversary.  You can also follow a link to a post,  " SCSU AT 150: HOW IT ALL BEGAN BACK IN 1869 ," on the WJON radio site with a short historical sketch and early photographs. SCSU was founded as the Third District State Normal School at St. Cloud, MN. The name changed to St. Cloud State Teachers College in 1921 and to St. Cloud State College in 1957. The name then changed to St. Cloud State University in 1975. The Baptist College of Florida Celebrates 75th Anniversary

The Baptist College of Florida, located in Graceville, FL, is preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding .   The institution began in 1943 as Florida Baptist Institute and was initially located in Lakeland, FL . The name changed to Baptist Bible Institute in 1949 and it moved to Graceville. Control was assumed by the Florida Baptist State Convention in 1957. The name changed to Florida Baptist Theological College in 1988 and to The Baptist College of Florida in 2000. Centennial Celebrations Scheduled for Manhattan School of Music

A centennial celebration is underway at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.  The institution traces its roots to music classes offered at Union Settlement after 1913 .  It was  chartered as the Neighborhood Music School in 1920 and was renamed Manhattan School of Music in 1938. A post-graduate department added in 1941 and accreditation was granted by the Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools in 1956. One-thousand and seven (1,007) students were reported to IPEDS with just under one-half (488) enrolled as undergraduates. The Centennial Celebration web pages include information on founder, Janet Daniels Schenck , an historical timeline , and a schedule of centennial events planned for the 2018 academic year.

York College of Pennsylvania Recognized for Passing Milestone

The York (PA) Daily Record published a brief historical sketch, " First freshman class seeking four-year degrees entered York College of Pa. 50 years ago ," on August 8, 2018.  The article coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of baccalaureate programs at the institution and highlights the impact on the community. York College of Pennsylvania traces its roots to the York County Academy founded in 1787 and York Collegiate Institute founded in 1870.  The name of York Junior College was adopted in 1941 and then changed to York College of Pennsylvania in 1968. The webpage of the college  Archives and Special Collections  offers links to many historical photographs, college catalogs from 1856 to the present, yearbooks from 1901-2005, and other interesting resources.

Spotlight on Archives of Spelman College and Atlanta University Center Institutions

The DL B , blog of the Digital Library of Georgia featured a number of items from the Spelman College Archives in a post several weeks ago, " Preserving and Sharing Spelman Archival Treasurers ."  Mandy Mastrovita authored the post where she describes some of the items that are available through Our Story : Digitizing Publications and Photographs of the Historically Black Atlanta University Center Institutions ", a partnership of the Spelman Archives , the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library Archives Research Center , and the Digital Library of Georgia . The Our Story archives of the Atlanta University Center offers resources for studying  African American higher education and a number of fascinating institutions:  Atlanta University, Clark College, Clark Atlanta University , Gammon Theological Seminary , Interdenominational Theological Center , Morehouse College , Morris Brown College , and Spelman College .

Lincoln College of New England Announces Closure

  Lincoln College of New England, a small for-profit institution,  announced that it will no longer enroll students and intends to close at the end of 2018. The institution was founded in 1966 as Briarwood Secretarial School in Bristol, Connecticut.  Courses were offered the following year at a site in Southington, Ct.  The school then received its state charter in 1979 as Briarwood College.  Baccalaureate programs were add in 2005 for criminal justice and funeral service management.   Briarwood College was acquired by Lincoln Educational Services Corporation in 2008.  The following year LESC acquired Clemens College in Suffield, CT and merged the two institutions to form Lincoln College of New England. Open House at Jubilee College Historic Site this Weekend

The Friends of Jubilee College Historic Site are hosting an Open House on Saturday, August 18th beginning at 9:00 am.  I encourage readers to consider this opportunity for learning more about the founding of an early Illinois college.  The Jubilee College Historic Site is located adjacent to Jubilee College State Park a few miles northwest of Peoria, IL.  The Friends of Jubilee College Historic Site  deserve appreciation for their efforts to maintain the site at a time when state funding has largely disappeared.  You can also visit and like their Facebook page to learn more about group activities Philander Chase, who previously founded Kenyon College in Ohio, also founded Jubilee College during his service as the first Episcopal Bishop of Illinois.   Construction on the college began in 1839 and expanded to include  a dozen or more structures on a 3,500-acre tract of land. Coleman University Announces it Will be Closing

Coleman Unive rsity in San Diego, California announced last week that it will be closing.  Coleman was  founded in 1963 as the Automation Institute of San Diego.  It later changed the name to Coleman College and then to Coleman University after graduate programs were added in 1982.  Gary Robbins reported in The San Diego Union Tribune on July 30, 2018, " San Diego's Coleman University closing after 55 years ."  Matt Hoffman reporting for KPBS on August 3, 2018, " San Diego's Coleman University is Closing After 55 Years " includes a short audio clip.
