One of the best college traditions...today is Mountain Day at Mount Holyoke . The college web site indicates the tradition began in "...1838, the year after Mount Holyoke was founded. On Mountain Day, classes and other obligations are cancelled. In a nod to Mary Lyon, students are invited to balance their intellectual pursuits with outdoor activities. The actual date is kept secret until it is announced by the early-morning pealing of the bell in Mary Lyon Hall. Mountain Day typically involves climbing to the Summit House atop Mount Holyoke." The Board of Trustees of Mount Ida College announced today that the institution will close and agreement has been reached for acquisition of the campus by the University of Massachusetts .  The Mount Ida website includes statements from the trustees and the institution's president, Barry Brown, along with an F.A.Q. section for students and others interested in learning more about the agreement. Mount Ida was founded in 1899  on Mount Ida Hill in Newton Centre, MA by George Franklin Jewett and Abigail Faye Jewett .  It closed during the Great Depression and  was reopened by William F. Carlson and his son F. Roy Carlson in 1939.  Mount Ida was accredited as a junior college in 1961.  It merged with  Chamberlayne Junior College in 1987 and the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1989.  Mount Ida offered baccalaureate programs after 1998 and graduate degrees after 2009. Two Massachusetts newspapers reported earlier today that Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, MA will close.  Atlantic Union had previously closed in spring 2011 before reopening again for the fall semester 2015.  It was unable to regain accreditation or provide a stable stream of revenue.  The Fitchburg, MA Sentinel and Enterprise published reporting by Peter Jasinski, " Atlantic Union College announces it is closing after 140 years of operation ." " Atlantic Union College in Lancaster will close ," appeared in the Worchester, MA Telegram and Gazette  with reporting by Scott O'Connell .
