The Lafayette , newspaper of Lafayette College, posted an interesting article this past week, " A historic legacy: archivist Diane Shaw retires after three decades of growing college’s collections ."  Reporter Morgan Sturm provides details of Shaw's efforts to expand collections after joining the campus community in 1985.  Shaw preserved the history of the college and focused attention on the collection of artist’s books, rare books, manuscripts and anti-slavery works.  Shaw is also praised for her work on the Marquis de Lafayette Collection. Purdue University's Libraries, Archives, and Special Collections website includes a Purdue Campus Facilities and Buildings Historic Database page that allows users to become familiar with the history of the West Lafayette campus using an interactive map.  Users can adjust the slider below the map to see how the campus has changed over the course of the institution's history from 1874 up to the present.  There is also a search box for entering keywords to locate a more specific collection of buildings. Dartmouth in Hanover, NH is preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding in 1769. The anniversary web page provides information on scheduled events, a short YouTube video, " Dartmouth 250: Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future ," and other resources. A new book, Dartmouth Undying: A Celebration of Place and Possibility , edited by David Shribman and Jim Collins is available now for pre-order. There will also be a “Hindsight is 20/19,” 26-episode podcast series celebrating Dartmouth’s history. Library staffers and students identified 25 tangible pieces, one per decade, central to the institution's history and will begin offering podcast episodes on each item in January 2019. The University of Connecticut Archives and Special Collections maintains an interesting blog.  One of their posts from earlier this year caught my attention this morning.  The " Augustus Storrs Hall " post with the building honoring the person who donated land for an agricultural college in 1880. Augustus Storrs Hall was built in 1906 and was the first brick building on campus. It was initially a men’s dormitory with 66 two-man rooms but within two years each room held three students. In 1952 it was renovated for offices and classrooms. It is now home to the School of Nursing. UConn was  founded as Storrs Agricultural School in 1881. The name changed to Storrs Agricultural College 1893, to Connecticut Agricultural College in 1899, to Connecticut State College in 1933, and finally to the University of Connecticut in 1939. The History of Education Society posted an interesting article by Clare Stainthorp, " student identities at birmingham's mason college ."  Mason College was founded in 1875 and is considered as a predecessor for the University of Birmingham that received a Royal Charter in 1900.  Stainthorp notes two proposed names, "Josiah Mason's Scientific College" or "Josiah Mason's College for the Study of Practical Science," implying that there would be a vocational focus at the institution.  However, Mason College admitted students of both genders with a variety of backgrounds and Stainthorp describes a healthy interdisciplinary tension playing out between the arts and various scientific disciplines.  She concludes with a recommendation that more consideration should be given to relationships between various disciplines in late-Victorian higher education. St. Cloud State University in Minnesota is preparing to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding in 186 9.  The initial sesquicentennial page includes a short video and links to a timeline , various events or news related to the anniversary.  You can also follow a link to a post,  " SCSU AT 150: HOW IT ALL BEGAN BACK IN 1869 ," on the WJON radio site with a short historical sketch and early photographs. SCSU was founded as the Third District State Normal School at St. Cloud, MN. The name changed to St. Cloud State Teachers College in 1921 and to St. Cloud State College in 1957. The name then changed to St. Cloud State University in 1975. The York (PA) Daily Record published a brief historical sketch, " First freshman class seeking four-year degrees entered York College of Pa. 50 years ago ," on August 8, 2018.  The article coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of baccalaureate programs at the institution and highlights the impact on the community. York College of Pennsylvania traces its roots to the York County Academy founded in 1787 and York Collegiate Institute founded in 1870.  The name of York Junior College was adopted in 1941 and then changed to York College of Pennsylvania in 1968. The webpage of the college  Archives and Special Collections  offers links to many historical photographs, college catalogs from 1856 to the present, yearbooks from 1901-2005, and other interesting resources.

The DL B , blog of the Digital Library of Georgia featured a number of items from the Spelman College Archives in a post several weeks ago, " Preserving and Sharing Spelman Archival Treasurers ."  Mandy Mastrovita authored the post where she describes some of the items that are available through Our Story : Digitizing Publications and Photographs of the Historically Black Atlanta University Center Institutions ", a partnership of the Spelman Archives , the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library Archives Research Center , and the Digital Library of Georgia . The Our Story archives of the Atlanta University Center offers resources for studying  African American higher education and a number of fascinating institutions:  Atlanta University, Clark College, Clark Atlanta University , Gammon Theological Seminary , Interdenominational Theological Center , Morehouse College , Morris Brown College , and Spelman College .

Ava Dickerson posted " 1883 Fire !" on the Indiana University Archives blog, Blogging Hoosier History.  Her historical sketch describes the financial and cultural significance of the fire and how the citizens of Bloomington rallied to support the institution. Fires are often significant parts of institutional history and an earlier post on June 22, 2016, " A history of IU fires ," describes a number of fires on campus.

Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, CA is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1918.  You can visit an anniversary web page with links to activities and other resources . The Santa Rosa Junior College archives page describes various historical resources and services offered and includes a link to view historical images in the college digital archives. The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library Digital Archive posted a couple of historical sketches on Facebook for Southern Female University and Florence University for Women . In its Friday, July 11, 1890 issue, the newly-founded *Florence Times* stated: “Florence already has buildings of which she may feel justly proud, but when the Baptist University is completed it will be the most magnificent structure in the city.” The *Times* was referring to the Southern Female University, under the auspices of the Baptist Church, which was then under construction near the water tower on Seymour Avenue, which in 1890 was a mile or two outside town. The SoGlos online magazine in  Cheltenham,  Gloucestershire published a fascinating interview with Rachel Roberts, archivist at Cheltenham Ladies' College .  Roberts discusses  her responsibilities for collecting, recording and displaying the archives and the insight they offer into the school’s history. The college was founded in 1853 and serves as an independent boarding and day school. The college website includes a number of innovative presentations of historical information.  The  COLLEGE IN ONE HUNDRED OBJECTS  was set up to celebrate our landmark 160th anniversary in 2014.  The projects brought together pupils, Guild members (alumnae) and staff in developing a shared tribute to Cheltenham Ladies' College distinctive values and atmosphere. SCRIPPS College of Communications at Ohio University  in Athens, OH posted, " COMS seniors holdhistorical virtual, walking tours of campus ," last spring with information on a class project that involved students matching alumni memories with historical images from the Ohio UniversityArchives  and Special Collections and other campus information.  Students then used the website Histoypin.org to create virtual walkingtours of the campus .

Tarleton State University Library Special Collections and Archives offers a number of innovative ways to access institutional history and traditions.  You can view a number of images and brief descriptions through the " Tarleton State University Campus History Tour ," on the Historypin site. There is also a " Timeline of Tarleton History " created using Tiki-Toki web-based timeline software.  You can quickly scan historical images selected from the archives and click on any of interest for more information. Links are also provided off an About Us drop down menu for a number of resources.  The History & Heritage Book is a 70-page document that includes a comprehensive array of institutional information from the history of campus buildings through origins of campus traditions and everything in between. I gave a shout-out in early 2018 to the archives at Indiana University for their active and effective use of social media, " Day in the Life of a College Student in 1890s.. ."   Today, I'll feature Ohio University Archives and Special Collections and University Libraries .  They are  currently hosting an exhibit, " Women at Ohio University, 150 Years of Life and History , " and sent a tweet this morning linking to a diary of Maggie Boyd in the archives , the first OU woman graduate. The archives also maintains a Pinterest board,  @MaggieBoyd1873's World , with links to institutional publications, photographs, slide shows, research, and other items related to Maggie Boyd and her time at the institution. The archives also used Twitter to publish entries from Maggie's senior diary using  @MaggieBoyd1873 . You can also read directly from  images of Maggie's diary through the digital archives .

The University of Illinois, known as Illinois Industrial University, held its first classes on March 2, 1868.  The Student Life and Culture Archives at the university posted, " Reflections on Opening Day 150 years Ago - 2 March 1868 ," written by Gregory Behle, professor at The Master's University.  Behle draws on photographs and other resources from the institutional archives in his portrayal of activities on the campus.

100 years of articles from  The Indiana Magazine of History are available online an no charge.  The magazine is one of the nation's oldest historical journals and issues from 1905-2015 are now easily accessible.  Researchers can browse individual issues or search all the issues by topic.  The respective articles are then available for viewing online or they can be downloaded as .pdf files. The Margaret M. Tobin Center for Archives and Special Collections of the Saint Francis University Library announced that it now offers the Saint Francis University digital repository .  Historic photographs, campus publications, and student research papers are included in the digital collection . Users can choose to browse by title or use the search box to enter search words.   Three images from the collection documenting a tragic October 30, 1942 fire on the campus that destroyed the historic Old Main are inserted below in the Google Slides presentation. Julia Kilgore of the t he Indiana University Archives authored an interesting post, " Sincerely Yours: a day in the life of a new student ," using letters of a new student who came to the campus in 1890 with an interest in studying history.  I encourage readers to visit   Blogging Hoosier History  and scan through some of their other posts.    The IU Archives also maintains  an active and effective social media presence through Twitter [ @IUBArchives] , the Indiana University Archives page on Facebook  , or on Instagram . The Atlas Obscura web site offers a fascinating post by Anika Burgess from January 4, 2018, " Student Life at the First Medical College for Women: The pioneering women who faced jeers and discrimination to become doctors ."  Burgess incorporates numerous historical photos and other items to both describe student life and also highlight some of the significant contributions of the women as they pursued their professional lives.  The medical institution was founded in 1850 as the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania.  It was renamed as the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1867 and the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1970 when it became coed.  It then merged with merged with Hahnemann University to become McP Hahnemann University School of Medicine as part of Allegheny University of Health Sciences.  This university later declared bankruptcy in July 1998 and Drexel University took over management of MCP Hahnemann University of Health Sciences a...
