WBTW-TV, " Coker College has a new name ," and WPDE-TV, " Coker College Board of Trustees approves name change, school to operate as Coker University ,"  both of Florence, SC, reported this week that the Board of Trustees of Coker College approved a name change. The name change will occur in 2019. Coker College is located in Hartsville, SC and was founded in 1896 as Welsh Neck Academy. It became Coker College for Women in 1908 and the name changed to Coker College in 1970. It was affiliated with the  South Carolina Baptist Convention , but has been non-denominational since 1944.  It officially became co-educational in 1969, although men had been attending since the end of World War II.

Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, PA announced this week that it will seek university status and  become Messiah University in July 2020 . The institution was founded as Messiah Bible School and Missionary Training Home in 1909 . The name changed to Messiah Bible College in 1924 and to Messiah College in 1951.  Messiah merged with Upland College of Upland, CA in 1965. Rochester College in Rochester Hills, Michigan is changing its name to become Rochester University . The institution was founded as North Central Christian College in 1959 . The name change to Michigan Christian Junior College in 1961 and to to Michigan Christian College in 1978. The name of Rochester College was then adopted in 1997. The Crested Butte News reports that Western State Colorado University is re-branding as Western Colorado University . The institution was founded in Gunnison, CO in 1901 as Colorado State Normal School . The name changed to Western State College of Colorado in 1923 and to Western State Colorado University in 2012.

Craig Huchison of Michigan's Press & Guide  provides an interesting historical sketch in " Henry Ford College celebrates 80 years and a rich legacy ."  Huchison reports that the main campus of the college comprises 75 acres that used to be the deer park of Henry Ford’s Fair Lane Estate and the Ford home lies on a short path behind the campus.  The article is accompanied by a number of historical photographs. The institution in Dearborn, MI was founded in 1928 as Fordson Junior College.  It closed briefly from 1943-1946 and reopened as Dearborn Junior College.  The name changed to Henry Ford Community College in 1952 and then to Henry Ford College after 2014. The Southbend Tribune reported today on an upcoming name change for Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN in " Trustees announce name change as Bethel becomes a university ."  The new name will be Bethel University.  Bethel also offers a web page devoted to the name change that includes a video message from Randy Lehman, chair of the Board of Trustees, an FAQ and implementation timeline.  The new name will be official next spring after May 6, 2019. Ted McDermott reports for the Montana Standard  on May 7, 2018 that " Montana Tech selects a new name ."  The institution now known as  Montana Tech of the University of Montana will become Montana Technological University. The institution was  founded in 1900 as the Montana State School of Mines .  The name changed to  Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology in 1965.  It later  affiliated with the University of Montana in 1994 to become Montana Tech of the University of Montana.

Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan announced that it will change its name to Calvin University by 2020 .  The institution, affiliated with the  Christian Reformed Church,  was founded in 1876 as a theological school . It became John Calvin Junior College in 1906 and changed its name to Calvin College and Seminary in 1908.

Dordt College announced this week that it will change its name to Dordt University in May 2019.  The college website offers a short video with president  Erik Hoekstra and a page of frequently asked questions . The institution located in Sioux Center, Iowa and affiliated with the  Christian Reformed Church was founded in 1953 as  Midwest Christian Junior College . The name changed to Dordt College in 1956. WNAX radio offers a short audio segment reporting on the name change .

The Limestone College Board of Trustees approved plans that include a name change to Limestone University in 2020 .  The moves were adopted to coincide with the 175th anniversary of the institutional founding in 1845. The Mankato Free Press published a retrospective article March 5, 2018, " Mankato site of state's first public vo-tech ," that provides a brief historical sketch for what is now South Central College. The institution was founded in 1946 as Mankato Vocational School, the first public, post-secondary vocational-technical school in the state. The name change in 1989 to Mankato Technical College. It merged in 1992 to become Albert Lea-Mankato Technical College. Three years later it joined MN State Colleges and Universities System in 1995. Following realignment, it joined with the Faribault campus of what had formerly been MN Riverland Technical College to become South Central Technical College. The name was changed in 2005 to South Central College. South Central College serves 5,090 students and offers 45 academic programs. It also serves over 9,000 additional people through customized training and continuing education programs.

The State Journal  of Clarksburg, West Virginia posted " Honoring history, heritage was reason for university name change ," indicating that Salem International University recently changed its name to Salem Unive rsity.  Salem University is a small, for-profit institution and enrolls roughly 850 students. The institution, located in Salem, WV, was founded as Salem College in 1888.  It joined with Teikyo University Foundation  to form Salem-Teikyo University in 1989. The name was changed to Salem International University in 2000 and to Salem University in 2018

Warner Pacific College in Portland, OR announced that it has become Warner Pacific University .  The institution was founded in 1937 in Spokane, WA as Pacific Bible College.  The school moved to Portland in 1940 and became Warner Pacific College in 1959.  It is affiliated with the Church of God (Anderson, IN).  Visit the WPU web site for an historical sketch and timeline of key dates in the institution's history .

Tusculum College in Tennessee announced this week that it will change its name to Tusculum University beginning July 1, 2018 .  Tusculum is the " ...oldest institution of higher education in Tennessee, the twenty-eighth oldest in the nation, and the oldest coeducational institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). " Tusculum's traces its history to the founding of Martin's Academy in 1784, later renamed as Washington College.   It was later was known as Tusculum College after 1844.  Tusculum merged with Greeneville College in 1868 to become Greeneville & Tusculum College.  The name was shortened to Tusculum College in 1912.
