East Central College in Union, MO is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1968 with the first classes in fall 1969.  It opened as East Central Junior College and changed its name to East Central College in 1979. The 50th anniversary web page includes an event calendar and an historical timeline .

State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1968 .    The anniversary page includes a list of activities scheduled during the 2018-2019 academic year.  A brief historical sketch is available on the college website  that includes names of presidents who have served the institution, Enrollment has grown to more than 13,758 students  and classes are offered online and through campuses in Sedalia, Boonville, Clinton, Eldon, the Lake of the Ozarks, Warsaw, and Whiteman Air Force Base. The Sedalia Democrat published an article on the anniversary by Hope Lecchi, " A golden anniversary celebration for the community ," that includes several historic photographs.

Interesting article in the Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune , " Alumni salute fallen military school at museum dedication ," with Tess Vrbin reporting on the opening of a museum in Lexington, MO devoted to the history of Wentworth Military Academy.  While Vrbin focused on WMA alumni and their activities after the school closed, she also incorporated details of history of Kemper Military School that was located in Boonville, MO and the Missouri Military Academy that is still operating successfully in Mexico, MO.  I enjoyed reading this context and particularly appreciated Vrbin's comments on what WMA alumni learned from the experiences of KMA alumni. Saint Louis University in Missouri is celebrating the bicentennial of its founding in 1818  as Saint Louis Academy and later, Saint Louis College.  You can visit the university web site for a variety of resources that include a timeline , an innovative app that can be downloaded for the SLU 200-Years-In-One Challenge  where the broader SLU community is asked to complete 200 years of volunteer service or the equivalent of 1.75 million hours, bicentennial events , and information for ordering a bicentennial history, Always at the Frontier: Saint Louis University 1818-2018 , written by Dolores Byrnes, with John Padberg, S.J. and John Waide.

St. Louis University erected a marker in honor of Jesuit Claude Heithaus, who delivered a fiery sermon at St. Francis Xavier College Church , which many credit for helping to end segregation at the school. I like the concept of honoring "pillars of the university" in this way. Sharon K. Sanders authored a post for the Southeast Missourian , " Remembering St. Vincent's College grotto ," based on three articles from the paper's archives previously published in the 1950s. St. Vincent's College was founded in 1838 overlooking the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau, MO. The college was an  outgrowth of St. Mary's Seminary previously founded near Perryville, MO in 1819 and when St. Vincent's was founded, St. Mary's became a preparatory school. A fire in 1866 destroyed some of the building of St. Mary's and the school was moved to Cape Girardeau and absorbed by St. Vincent's. Prior to the Civil War, most students at St. Vincent's came from the south and roughly 50% were from Louisiana each year. Enrollment from southern states declined after the war and in 1866-67 only three students were from Louisiana. The Sedalia (MO) Democrat published a couple of articles on Central Business College, " Life at Central Business College in 1932 ," and " Central Business College alums praise education ." The proprietary institution was founded by C.W. Robbins in 1883 and closed in 1968. Robbins also operated the Sedalia Telegraph School as division of Central Business College. Robbins purchased the Missouri School of Telegraphy in 1907. He then purchased the Western Telegraph Institute of Sedalia the following year. He combined all three schools as Sedalia Telegraph School until closing out the program in 1917. BuffaloReflex.com published a couple of interesting articles as part of a series by Paul Johns exploring the history of Cottey College.  The first, " Alice Cottey and her women's college in the MOzarks ," was published May 14, 2018 and provides background information on Alice Cottey and how she decided to start an educational institution in Nevada, MO.   " The saga of Cottey College of Nevada, MO ," followed two days later on May 16, 2018 and offers a number of incidents in the early history of the institution.
